Spencer Jerome Hammett, of Compton, MD, died peacefully on July 27, 2025, surrounded by his family. Jerome was born in Park Hall, MD on July 18, 1936, to Ignatius Abell Hammett and Ethel Marie Ridgell Hammett. He was the husband of Joyce Ann Guy, whom he married on June 22, 1963, at Saint Aloysius Church in Leonardtown, Maryland and who died on September 23, 2006. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Jerome is survived by three children, Mike Hammett (Kathleen), Matt Hammett (Fay), and Susan Tippett (David). He is also survived by his eight granddaughters: Kristen Shepherd (Cody), Valerie Hammett, Grace Hammett, Julie Tippett, Ella Hammett, Lauren Tippett, Clara Hammett, and Faith Hammett, and two great grandchildren: Emersyn Shepherd and Wyatt Shepherd. Four siblings survive him: Carney Hammett, Cecilia Atkins, John Hammett, and Lou Guy as well as sister-in-law Patty Hammett. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Joyce Ann Guy Hammett, daughter Carol Ann Hammett, his siblings Agnes Wathen, Dan Hammett, Evelyn Wathen, Doris Norris, and David Hammett, sisters-in-law Barbara Hammett, Kitty Hammett, and Gertrude Hammett, and brothers-in-law Woodrow Wathen, Hayden Wathen, Bob Norris, Guy Landau, Sr, Ken Atkins, and Joe Matt Guy.

Jerome attended Sacred Heart School in Bushwood, MD. His true passion was for plumbing. He received his master's license in the early 1980s after which he opened his plumbing business and worked until he retired in the early 2000s. Jerome's unwavering commitment to providing for his family was evident in the countless hours he dedicated to plumbing.

In his free time, he could be found on his boat fishing or crabbing, maintaining his property and rabbit hunting. He shared special times with his wife, Joyce, playing cards, dancing, listening to country music, dining out, and watching the Baltimore Orioles. Some of the family's favorite memories with him include camping, spending time together at sports events, school programs, vacationing in Ocean City and Myrtle Beach. In the later years of his life, Jerome spent quality time dancing and playing cards with his special companion, Mary Agnes Graves, who predeceased him. He will always be remembered for his contagious smile and gentle soul.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 pm, with prayers recited at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Newtowne, MD, with Father Edward Hegnauer officiating.

Serving as pallbearers will be Cody Shepherd, Valerie Hammett, Grace Hammett, Lauren Tippett, Tim Hammett, Dale Landau, Ritchie Hall, and Nick Guy.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kristen Shepherd, Julie Tippett, Ella Hammett, Clara Hammett, Faith Hammett, Emersyn Shepherd and Wyatt Shepherd.
