Janet Hill Thompson, 82, of Avenue, MD, passed away peacefully in her home on July 23, 2025, in the presence of her family. Born June 24, 1943, at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC she was the daughter of the late John Archibald "Archie" Hill and Raymond "Rae" Marie Oliver Hill and sister to the late Cynthia Rae Emerson. Janet is survived by her two children, John Joseph "Jay" Thompson, Jr, and his wife Sharon, and Diane Marie Thompson, and her husband Stan Guy, both of Avenue. She was predeceased by her daughter Debra Lynn Thompson, (1965).

Her greatest joys were her four grandchildren, John Joseph Thompson, III and his wife Jessica, Candace Nicole Thompson Nelson and her husband Andy, Natalie Marie Thompson and her friend Jason, and Leanne Grace Fenwick, and her five great-grandchildren, Hunter Thompson, Cooper Thompson, Danielle Nelson, Grace Nelson, and Carson Guy.

She was the loving wife of the late John Joseph "Johnny" Thompson, whom she married on August 31, 1963, at St. John's Church in Clinton, MD. He preceded her in death in 2022.

Janet grew up in Clinton, MD and graduated from Surrattsville High School in 1961 and worked for the phone company, now known as Verizon, in Washington, DC. She spent many summer weekends at the "cottage" in Colton's Point with her parents and sister and met her beloved husband of 59 years. They moved to Avenue after they married in 1963. She left the phone company to raise her children and returned to work for them in 1977. She retired and worked for The Printing Press in Leonardtown from 2003 to 2014.

Janet will forever be remembered by her ability to brighten a room as soon as she walked in. She was always dressed nicely, hair and nails done, make-up perfect, smiling and laughing. Her collection of high heels will go down in history! She was a social butterfly and loved being around people. Her home was always perfect and open to friends and family, and she cherished every visitor she received. She loved dancing and playing cards and her favorite "hobby" was shopping.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown MD, where prayers will begin at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at Holy Angels Church, Avenue, MD, with Father Joseph Cwik officiating. Interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Bushwood, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Johnny Thompson, III, Andy Nelson, Joe Mike Tippett, Ritchie Tippett, Owen Tippett and Andrew Tippett.

Contributions can be made to Hospice of St. Mary's.
