![]() Terence Thomas Flyntz, a loyal husband, father, grandfather and accomplished cybersecurity expert, died on June 7, 2025, in La Plata, Md., following a brief battle with cancer. He was 77 years old.
Born on April 27, 1948, at Bethany Deaconess Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., Terence (Terry as he was known to most) was the beloved son of Terence Joseph Flyntz and Irene (Milhaupt) Flyntz. Terry grew up in New York City, attending P.S. 133 in Queens, J.H.S. 172 in Queens, and graduating from Martin Van Buren High School in Queens in 1965. A decorated student, Terry attended Queens College in New York City and later transferred to Stony Brook University when the family moved from the City to Suffolk County in 1967. He earned a B.S.E.E. from Stony Brook in 1972 and an M.S. in Computer Science from Stony Brook in 1975. He received his J.D. from American University in Washington, D.C., in 1980, fulfilling his late father's wishes. He worked for the Department of the Navy from 1975-1980 on secure communications systems development. From 1980-82, Terry worked for the U.S. Justice Department's Drug Enforcement Administration Research and Development Division, and from 1982-87, he worked for Gemma Corporation developing secure communications and telemetry systems for Navy test and training centers. He was a member of Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) during his IT Security career. In the late '80s, Terry branched out on his own as a distinguished cybersecurity expert, founding and leading two small businesses in the D.C. area – Xeta International and Delta Security Technologies (DST). DST expanded rapidly and had its main campus at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi with satellite offices in several cities throughout the continental U.S. and Hawaii. He led his company's efforts to acquire security contracts within all areas of the Department of Defense, primarily with the Navy, but won contracts for all military services, including the U.S. Coast Guard. This expanded into many other factions of government, including the Veterans Association and Federal Aviation Administration. Terry later served as a security consultant for the federal government. Terry had a passion for sports, especially his hometown New York Jets, Mets and Knicks, as well as watching the NFL Draft with his son, Joey, a diehard Redskins/Commanders fan. His mother's residence in the Orlando, Fla., suburbs allowed him to spoil his family with many a day at Disney World. He enjoyed spending time at his waterfront St. George's Island, Md., home, vacationing in Maui, swimming, scuba diving and shooting pool. He also appreciated the finer things in life, including scotch, cigars and sports cars. He is survived by his loving wife of more than 30 years, JoAnn Flyntz; his son, Terence "Joey" Flyntz; his daughter-in-law, Meredith, and his cherished grandchildren, James (15) and Jordan (12). He is also survived by his brother, Thomas (Tom), his sister, Barbara, and his stepdaughter, Michelle. Terry will be remembered for his technological know-how, entrepreneurial spirit and prideful nature. His legacy survives through his family, including his grandson, James, who already shows signs of the same scientific and engineering acumen at an early age.
