George Kennedy Abell
Sunday, November 25th, 1951 - Saturday, June 7th, 2025

George Kennedy Abell, 73, of Piney Point, MD, passed away on June 7, 2025, in Leonardtown, MD. Born November 25, 1951, in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of the late Ann Lawrence Abell and the late Robert Peery Abell, Sr. George was the loving husband of Sandy Gatton Abell, who he married on August 6, 1977, at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church in Leonardtown, MD. He is survived by his daughter, Shannon (Abell) Dent and son-in-law Rob Dent, of Great Mills, MD, grandsons Robby and Rhett Dent, brother Robert Abell (Janice), nephews, Robby Abell (Sherri), George Allen Abell (Carrie), nieces, Jaime Weber (John), Melissa Long (Brandon), and countless friends who were like family.

George graduated from Ryken High School in 1969. A proud veteran, George served in the United States Army from January 12, 1973, until he was honorably discharged on December 18, 1975. He graduated from the University of Maryland University College in May 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. That same month, he began his civilian career with the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division at NAS Patuxent River as a Computer Scientist with the Computer Sciences Directorate. He then served as the Deputy Director of the Corporate Operations Group from January 1998-September 2004. He became the Director of the Infrastructure Business Operations Department in September 2004 and remained in that position until his retirement from civil service in July 2010. George lived a life of service. He served as a member of the St. Mary's County Ethics Commission from 1996-2001, serving as the Chairman from July 1999-July 2001. He also served as a member of the Third District Optimist Club from 1985-2013, serving as a Secretary, Treasurer, and President during his tenure. He also was a board member of the St. Mary's Nursing Center Foundation from 1995-1998. He was also a member of the Governing Board of Directors for St. Mary's Nursing Center, Inc. from 2011 to 2013.

George was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County and enjoyed boating, crabbing, fishing, going to the beach, and Jimmy Buffet music. He was a wonderful husband and father, and nothing made him prouder than being the World's Greatest Poppy to his grandbabies- "Buddy" (Robby) and "Bubba" (Rhett).

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with prayers recited at 7:00 PM, in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 10:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Deacon Joe Lloyd and Pastor Cheryl Goins officiating. Interment will follow at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Robby Abell, George Allen Abell, John Weber, Brandon Long, Daniel Powell, and AJ Bell. Honorary pallbearers will be Robby and Rhett Dent.

Contributions may be made to the Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Valley Lee, MD.
