Jose "Pepe" Francisco Salas Gandara, age 80, died January 23rd, 2025 in La Plata, Maryland. Pepe was born July 4th, 1944 in Chihuahua, Mexico, son of the late Francisco and Genoveva Salas Gandara.

Pepe moved to the United States in 1956 and resided in El Paso, Texas. He served in the United States Army until 1968, where he earned First Lieutenant rank and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. His military service is what brought him to the Washington, D.C. area.

Pepe had an entrepreneurial spirit, which started at a very young age. He owned many businesses throughout his career, mostly in Charles and Prince George's counties. He was also a realtor; assisting families in the purchase of their first home or investment property and later focused on selling and managing commercial properties.

He was very active throughout his life. He loved the beach and the beauty of Maryland. He was an avid bike rider and enjoyed riding along the C & O Canal. He enjoyed the Smithsonian Museums and the wealth of information and wonder in the exhibits.

Pepe was very involved in the community and various charities. He was always willing and eager to help those in need. He was a strong supporter of Lifestyles of Maryland and their mission, provided free books to local children as well as children in areas affected by natural disasters, and donated to several charities.

Pepe is survived by his sister: Elizabeth Gandara Gutierrez (Rigo Bautista) of El Paso, Texas, and his children: Michelle (Jerry) Anderson, Rebecca (David) Thalacker, Jenny Gandara, and Michael Gandara. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Michael, Taylor, Lauren, Marissa, Marc-Anthony, Adam, Mary-Katherine, and Mya. He leaves behind extended family, many friends and beloved employees.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Pepe's honor to Lifestyles of Maryland Foundation, Inc. (http://www.lifestylesofmd.org).
