James Daniel McCarthy, Jr, of Potomac, MD, died 19 April 2008, due to complications from pneumonia, surrounded by his family, at Inova Alexandria Hospital.
Born on 23 June 1930 in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. McCarthy graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1948 and Wayne State University undergraduate and law programs shortly thereafter. Following law school, he moved to Washington D.C. where he served as a tax agent with the Internal Revenue Service. Later he would move to New York City and worked for the international accounting firm Alexander Grant and Co. A resident of Rockville and Potomac, Maryland since 1967, Mr. McCarthy returned to the Washington, D. C. area to lead the tax consulting division at General Business Services, Inc. once the largest franchise business in the U.S. During his time at GBS, he provided annual tax seminars across the country and developed close personal friendships with many of GBS's over 700 franchisees. After 20 years, he left GBS and started his own practice, Specialized Tax Service where he worked until the day he died. It was noted by his family, that he made it through one more tax season. While providing tax and estate advice was has prime livelihood, one of his greatest joys and proudest accomplishments were the students he taught and mentored for over twenty years at Southeastern University in Washington, D.C. His marriage to Judith Lemanske ended in divorce. Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret Buckler McCarthy of Potomac, Maryland , one daughter Ellen McCarthy (Hannah) of Alexandria, VA; one son, Timothy McCarthy of Brunswick, MD; son-in-law Gordon Hannah of Alexandria, VA ; three grandchildren, Benton McCarthy, Liam Hannah and Eileen Hannah; two nieces, Beth Ranalli and Audra Kozlowski; four nephews, Peter Hengy, James Hengy, Michael Hengy, Michal Baert. A funeral mass will be held for Mr. McCarthy at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church in Prince Frederick, Maryland at 11AM on Thursday, 23 April. Internment will follow at Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Friends and family are invited for food, beverage and good memories at the Rod and Reel Restaurant in the Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa at 1:30PM Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Wayne State University Law School, 471 West Palmer Street, Detroit, Michigan 48202 or Catholic Central High School, 27225 Wixom Road, Novi, Michigan, 48374.
