![]() James Webster "Sonny" Guy, 83, passed away on February 19, 2025 at MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown, MD with his loving wife at his side.
He was born on February 26th, 1941 in Leonardtown, MD to the late James Neary Guy and Mary Annette (nee: Downs) Guy. Sonny is a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County and a graduate of Leonardtown High School in 1960. On July 6, 1974 he married the love of his life, Joan Marie (nee: Brown) Guy at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Leonardtown, MD. Together they celebrated over 50 wonderful years of marriage. He was employed for 37 dedicated years as a skilled painter for the Architect of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 2004. Sonny grew up playing the hometown favorite sport of softball. He played for many years as an outfielder and second baseman for Clarkes Landing, earning several MVP awards; eventually inducted into the St. Mary's County Softball Hall of Fame in October of 1984. He was an avid bowler, bowling on a men's league and a mixed league with his wife for many years at Esperanza Lanes. When he wasn't on a ball field or bowling lane, he could be found on the tracks racing at Budd's Creek Motocross. He was mechanically inclined and regularly worked on family members' cars. He was a fan of NASCAR, cheering on Harry Gant and Bill Elliott. He enjoyed going to the races in Dover, Richmond and the Daytona 500; but also enjoyed watching them on television. His lawn was his work of art, also keeping it well groomed and cared for. He loved to keep a well manicured lawn for both him and his parents' homes on his John Deere tractor. Sonny enjoyed spending time with his best friend Daniel Burch and his "girls" Janet and Patty. In his later years, Sonny took great pride in being a grandfather, whom he was affectionately known as "Granddaddy" and "Granddoodles," and would often be seen riding around his front yard on his lawnmower with his grandchildren on his lap or raking leaves for them to play in. Sonny was a wonderful man who loved his family and would talk about them at every opportunity. In addition to his beloved wife, Joan, Sonny is also survived by his children: Duane Guy of Tampa, FL, Michael Guy of Mt. Airy, MD; and twins: Darrell Guy of Leonardtown, MD, and Tammy Guy (Ricky Jones) of Mechanicsville, MD; his sister, Joan Guy Waters (Gayn) of Santa Anna, CA; grandchildren: Taylor McCarthy (Kyle Bowles), Summer Goldsmith, Jose Guy-Bolt, and Juan Guy-Bolt; and extended family and friends including other patients & beloved staff from the Fresenius Dialysis Center (Leonardtown) whom he considered apart of his family.
