Hugh Charles Gardiner, III
April 23, 1933 ~ November 16, 2024

It is with great sadness and much love that the family of Hugh Charles Gardiner III announce his passing at the age of 91 on November 16, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy marked by dedication to his family, community and church, having been a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

The son of Hugh Jr. and Margaret Gardiner, he was born and raised in Faulkner Maryland. Hugh attended Mount St. Joseph's high school in Baltimore, Maryland, before pursuing further education at Mount St Mary's College. He served honorably in the US Army at Fort Shafter, Hawaii. After his military tenure and marriage to Margaret (Peggy) Gardiner, Hugh returned to Faulkner and joined his father to operate and expand the family business, Hugh C Gardiner Inc. Under their stewardship, the company grew, adapting to the evolving agricultural character of Southern Maryland and expanding into St. Mary's County with the help of his sons Mark and Hugh, who joined him in the business. Hugh remained involved with the business into the last few years of his life.

Hugh was a man of deep faith, actively involved in Sacred Heart Church in La Plata and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council. Over his life he was actively involved in the Charles County Fair Board, Charles County Soil Conservation Board, Charles County Farm Bureau, Charles County Chamber of Commerce and various other civic and business associations. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, sailing, boating, flying, and travel. He cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann (Peggy) Gardiner. He is survived by his wife, Hilda Montgomery Gardiner; children Patti Waters (Charlie), Michael Gardiner (Phi), Mark Gardiner (Melanie), Bill Gardiner (Anita), Julie Glorioso and Hugh Gardiner IV (Susan); grandchildren Andrew Waters and Kristen Bowling, Shawn, John, Meredith Brown, Mary T, Elizabeth, Charlie (Hugh V), Henry, James, Eva and Maya Gardiner, and Katie, Michael, and David Glorioso, as well as his sisters, Sister Mary Theresa Gardiner IHM, Susan Larkin, and Catherine Gardiner Forkum.

The family also takes this time to acknowledge the passing of predeceased family members - sisters Nancy Jo Gardiner and Eleanor Abell, brother David Gardiner, and nephew David Gardiner Jr.

A viewing will be held on Friday, November 22 from 4-7 pm, with prayers at 6:30, at Saint Ignatius Church in Port Tobacco, Maryland, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at noon on Saturday November 23 at Saint Ignatius Church in Port Tobacco, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, the Gardiner family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association and Hospice of the Chesapeake.
