Virginia Anne McDonald, 73, of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away on July 21, 2024, in Leonardtown, MD. Born on July 22, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Hazel Virginia McDonald and the late James Arthur McDonald.

Virginia was born in Washington, DC, and spent much of her life in Prince George's County, before moving to St. Mary's County in 1999 to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. When not at Bingo, work, or spending time with family, friends and especially her grandchildren (including fur-babies), she enjoyed staring out the kitchen window into her backyard, watching the hummingbirds, rabbits, and deer.

In the last years of her life, she was valiant in her struggle with cancer, demonstrating strength, courage, and independence. She never gave up the fight, maintaining her positive, pollyanna perspective until the very end. She was as resilient as she was stubborn. Her determination and optimism never faltered, and we loved her for it.

She is survived by her daughter, Terri Lemerise (Rob), her siblings, Francis McDonald (Eileen) of Leonardtown, MD, Marilyn Essex of Alexandria, VA, Dee Putney (Marc) of San Antonio, TX, Billy McDonald of Leonardtown, MD, and David McDonald (Joyce) of Savannah, GA, her grandchildren, Buddy and Breanna Lemerise, as well as multiple nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her siblings, Barbara Bowden, Tommy McDonald (LaVerne of Springfield, VA), Robby McDonald, and life-partner Bob Stevens.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 26, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. Prayer Services, officiated by Father Ray Schmidt, will take place at 2:00 PM.
Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

…I know you have to go home, Mom. It's okay to eat and run.
