![]() Gunner Quinton Kerig, age 25, of Indian Head, Maryland passed away on March 1, 2024.
Gunner was born on December 27, 1998, in Leonardtown, Maryland to Heather and Travis Kerig. He was a 2017 graduate of McDonough High School, where he excelled in athletics and shattered school records in lacrosse. During his senior year, Gunner scored an incredible 43 goals in a season, nearly doubling the school's long-held record, and won more than 130 faceoffs! In the opening game alone, he scored a record-tying 9 goals in a single game and set the tone for the season. He was courted by several college scouts, but ultimately decided to pursue a career as an HVAC mechanic after graduation. He had been working in the field since 16 years of age and was exceptionally diligent and talented. His abilities and work ethic were recognized by the Local 602 Steamfitters Union where he garnered a coveted spot in an apprenticeship program and was in the fourth year of the intensive five-year program. In his spare time, Gunner channeled his love for sport into hunting, fishing, and most recently into Jiu Jitsu training. He trained tirelessly and was wildly successful even as a novice, winning several medals in his first few tournaments. Gunner was the epitome of the life of the party, always armed with a dirty joke and a contagious sense of humor. His quick wit and infectious laughter lit up any room he entered. Those who had the pleasure of knowing Gunner will fondly recall his memorable antics, such as the time he donned a blow-up unicorn costume and danced around for his daughter's birthday, ensuring that family gatherings were filled with laughter and joy. To know Gunner, truly was to love Gunner. His zest for life and love of adventure were contagious, leaving an indelible mark on all who crossed his path. Those who were close to Gunner, also knew that beyond the jokes and shenanigans, he was one of the sweetest and most caring people on the face of the earth. He was a loyal son who loved his family fiercely and never missed an opportunity to let them know. Although Gunner's time with us was far too short, the memories he created and the laughter he shared will live on in the hearts of everyone who was lucky enough to know him. He was loved more than he could have possibly known and will be deeply missed. Gunner is survived by his beloved mother, Heather Kerig, and by his daughter, Riley Kerig, who was the light of his life. He is also survived by his brother, Jacob Kerig, and his wife Casey; his sister, Chloe Kerig; his nephew, Malcolm Kerig; his maternal grandparents, Christopher and Phyllis Evans; and his paternal grandparents James and Beverly Kerig. Gunner was preceded in death by his father, Travis Kerig. All services are private. Instead of mourning his loss, we will celebrate Gunner's life as he would have wanted - with laughter, joy, fond memories, and jokes that he would find hysterical. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to an educational fund that has been established for his daughter Riley. Donations can be made via check made out to Riley Kerig in care of Jacob Kerig. Checks may be mailed to 417 Biddle Road, Accokeek, Maryland 20607.
