Janice Theresa Long, 83, of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away on December 5, 2023 at her home. Born on August 13, 1940 in Mechanicsville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Ann Pilkerton and the late Bernard Melvin Wood. Janice was the loving wife of the late Stanley A. Long, whom she married in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on May 10, 1958, and who preceded her in death on May 23, 2013. She is survived by her children Cheryl Coppage (George) of Chaptico, MD, Stanley "Vernie" Long (Janice) of Mechanicsville, MD, J. Roxanne Long of Chaptico, MD, and Charles "Frank " Long (Robin) of Charlotte Hall, MD, her siblings Evelyn Arnold of Leonardtown, MD, Julie Ann Matthews and Jacqueline Dalton of Hollywood, MD, Linda Reynolds, Melva Rita Buckler, Beverly Pelczar, and Zach Wood of Mechanicsville, MD, and Margaret Mary Burch of Charlotte Hall, MD, five grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Janice was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Angela "Boo-Boo" Long, and her siblings Imogene Burroughs, Rae Garner, Joyce Hammett, Charles Wood, and Richard Wood.

Janice was a lifelong St. Mary's County, MD resident and attended Margaret Brent High School. She was a homemaker and was a member of Mechanicsville Moose Lodge, Club Dance Association in Chaptico, and was inducted into the St. Mary's County Women's Softball League Hall of Fame in 1994. Janice enjoyed attending pitch card parties on Monday nights, listening and dancing to music at St. Mary's Landing, gambling, quilting, and canning. Mama loved cooking and having a house full of people.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 14, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 10:00 AM in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Mechanicsville, MD, with Father Michael Tietjen officiating. Interment will follow at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Long, Colin Long, Josh Colliflower, Matt Wever, Cody Colliflower, Mason Johnson and Jamie Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Laci Johnson, Brooke Colliflower, Brooklyn Etter, Hailey Long, Chris Long, Jensyn Wever, Bennett Wever, Clay Wever, and Cade Long.

Contributions may be made to the Mechanicsville Vol. Rescue Squad and/or the 7th District Vol. Rescue Squad.
