Robert Combs Russell, Sr., "Pal", 73, of California, MD, passed away on October 1, 2023 at his home. Born on July 7, 1950 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of the late Mary Myrtle Combs and the late Theodore A. Russell. Robert was married to the love of his life, Susie Howe Russell, whom he married on December 18, 1971 in St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Leonardtown, MD. Together they shared 51 years of marriage. He is survived by his children Robert C. Russell, Jr. (Barbara) of California, MD and Stephanie Bennett (Jeffrey) of California, MD, his sister Alice R. Eckman (George) of GA, his grandchildren Mikie Russell of California, MD, Robbie Russell of Great Mills, MD, Evan Bennett of California, MD, and Kyleigh Bennett of California, MD, and his great-grandchildren Cory, Emmitt, Bobbie, and Princess. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy M. Reiter.
Robert was a lifelong St. Mary's County, MD resident and graduated from Great Mills High School in 1969. He was a mason for Guy & Guy Masonry for 45 years until his retirement in December 2018. He served in the United States Army from July 9, 1970 to August 10, 1972 until he was honorably discharged. Robert also owned and worked on his family farm. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Ridge, MD and enjoyed farming and gardening. Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was loved by all who knew him; his nickname was "Pal" because he was such a loyal friend. Robert's best friend, Charlie Russell, was a great support for him during his six-year battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 13, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD, where a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM with Deacon Paul Bielewicz officiating.
