Sherman Hunter
Sherman S. Hunter, Jr., of White Plains, Maryland, died September 23, 2022 at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. Sherman was born on June 16, 1947 to the late Rev. Sherman. S. Hunter, Sr. and Martha (Rucker) Hunter in Bridgeport. Sherman grew up in Stratford, where he attended the Stratford Public School system. He maintained lifetime ties with his "Woodend Homes" friends throughout most of his life. Sherman graduated from Stratford High School in 1965, where he lettered in track. Prior to graduating from high school, Sherman enlisted in the United States Navy. Upon graduation, Sherman entered the Navy and was immediately deployed to the Vietnam War, where he served two tours and was honorably discharged. After being discharged, Sherman returned to Connecticut, where he met and married Princella (Bridges) Hunter in 1970. From this union, 3 sons were born: Sherman III, Shaft, and Shaun. Sherman began his career as a truck driver while working for Tower Olshen Electric in Bridgeport. He began working for United Parcel Service (UPS) in the warehouse and then loading trucks. Before long, he started driving small package trucks and 34 years later, he retired driving tandem tractor trailers as a feeder's driver. After retiring from UPS, Sherman and Princella relocated to Maryland to be closer to their 3 sons. Sherman attended the First Baptist Church of Stratford, Connecticut where he faithfully served as a member of the Senior Usher Board. He is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Princella; two sons Sherman III (LaPaula) of Accokeek, Maryland and Shaun (Cecille) of Greensboro, NC; a sister, Ella Evans (James) of Mt. Laurel, NJ; a brother, Isaac Hunter of Dayton, Ohio; 7 sisters-in-law and 1 brother-in-law; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; a host of other relatives; and a lifelong support/friend - Howard Johnson. He was predeceased by his son, Shaft; his parents, Sherman, Sr. and Martha; his sister, Theresa Mims; and a grandson. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 3rd, at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home in Mechanicsville, Maryland. Viewing will take place at 10 a.m. and the service will follow at 11 a.m. The burial will take place at Cheltenham Cemetery in Cheltenham, Maryland, at a later date.
