Robert Clagett Simmons, 94, of La Plata, MD died September 1, 2022, at Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center, Fort Washington, MD. On September 7, 1957, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Mae Purcell. While he was born in Washington D.C. on August 19, 1928, he was a longtime resident of La Plata, MD in Charles County. He graduated from Lackey High School in 1945. He retired from the United States Navy in 1982 after 38 years as a career civil servant. He served as a production controller/supervisor for the Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, MD. He was also a long-time member of the Marbury Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of La Plata.

He loved his family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them as well as supporting local sports teams especially the Indian Head Indians, Washington Redskins and Washington Senators/Nationals. He was the essence of humility, generosity, integrity, and dependability. He promoted a stable environment based on truth and compassion throughout his life and taught those around him through living a thoughtful and considerate life. He left a consistent impression on everyone who met him and left each one a better person. His life epitomized the maxim "A sunset on earth is a sunrise in heaven."

He was the son of the late Joseph "Hammie" Simmons and the late Ethel Wynn Simmons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Merium Ann Simone, his sisters Margaret Virginia Diamond and Mary Arlene Simmons, his brothers, John H. Simmons, Alfred E. Simmons, and Joseph H. Simmons. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Ann Rogman and brother Harold E. Simmons, two sons, James and Rob, daughter in law, Julie Anne Simmons, granddaughter, Kathryn Anne Simmons, grandson, Samuel Alan Simmons (married to Jennifer Simmons), great granddaughter, Charlotte Marie Simmons, great grandson, Everett Alan Simmons and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the future to celebrate the life of Robert and his beloved partner in life, Dorothy. Specific details will be announced in a separate notification
