Jane Oakes 79 of LaPlata, MD passed away at her home on Monday July 18, 2022.

Jane was born on January 21, 1943 in Newark, NJ to the late Fred and Grace Shumate. She is also predeceased by her son, Brian Oakes.

Jane is survived by her son, Fredericke Oakes, Jr. (Edana); daughter, Christine Soetebeer (Jeff); brother, Curtis Shumate (Gayle); sister, Anne Tomasko (Martin); grandchildren, Aidan Oakes, Colin Oakes, Shealyn Oakes, Declan Harkness, Kira Harkness, Matt Soetebeer, and Jake Soetebeer.

Jane grew up in Bloomfield, NJ and graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Newark, NJ in 1961. She and her former husband Fredericke moved to Hopatcong, NJ in 1973 where they raised three children. During that time, Jane was active in the community as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Hopatcong Fire Department and a volunteer with the Hopatcong Ambulance Squad.

Jane worked as a medical records technician before she started raising her kids and later worked as a medical receptionist with various medical practices in the 1980s and 1990s. She worked at Skylands Medical Group in Landing, NJ for the last 23 years of her career. Jane retired in 2017 and moved to La Plata, MD where she could spend more time with family. She met a wonderful group of ladies at her new home at the Maples senior apartment complex where they became fast friends.

Jane loved singing, dancing, and all things music. She especially loved broadway shows and went to see many of them over the years with her family and with her brother Curt. Jane loved family time during holidays, celebration dinners, and at her grandkids' activities. Jane loved telling her friends all about her grandkids' accomplishments! She also loved family vacations at the beach, playing board games, watching her favorite television shows, and keeping up with the latest entertainment and celebrity news.

The family will receive friends on Saturday July 30, 2022 at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home (211 St. Mary's Ave. LaPlata, MD 20646) from 3 to 6 PM with a Memorial Service at 5 PM. Her Interment will occur in New Jersey and will be private.
