Gilbert E. Chaney, 88, of Dunkirk passed away February 25, 2022, at Calvert Memorial Hospital. He was born July 14, 1933, in Deale, MD to John V. and Hazel Marie (Phipps) Chaney. Gilbert was raised on his family's farm in Dunkirk, after graduating from Calvert High School Gilbert joined the United States Marine Corps where he served in Korea. He was honorability discharged in June 1955.

Gilbert married Mary Elizabeth Catterton on October 8, 1955, and together they bought his family's farm which he worked until 2012 when he retired from farming. Gilbert also worked 13 years for Greyhound Bus as a mechanic before going to work for the D. C. Fire Department in the Apparatus Division where he retired after 26 years of service on October 1, 1999. He was currently a supervisor on the Calvert Soil Conservation Board where he served for over 20 years.

Gilbert was preceded by his parents, his wife of 44 years Mary, a brother James R. Chaney, and a sister Brenda Chaney. He is survived by his four children, Vicky L. Curtin, Gregory A. Chaney and wife Cindy, Valerie L. Chaney-Poe and husband Mike, and Tempi M. Chaney. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Elvis Poe and Carrie, Duane Poe, and Kevin Poe, three great-grandchildren, Tanner Zinn, David Poe, and Caleb Poe, a brother Robert L. Chaney and his wife Evelyn, a sister Pauline Hancock and her husband Daryl, nieces, nephews, and extended families including the Ford family, the Smith family, and the Adams family, as well as a host of other friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department.
