Mildred Geraldine Carter-Waring, 67, of Bryans Road, died January 13, 2009.

Mildred was a "miracle" 14-year Pancreatic Cancer Survivor. She was diagnosed in 1995 and remained cancer free at the end of her life in 2009.

Born January 15, 1941 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of Annie Elizabeth (Tolson) Colbert (age 94) and Harrison Colbert (deceased). She was raised in Chapel Hill, Maryland and graduated from Fairmont Heights High School.

In 1986, Mildred retired as the Mail Room Supervisor after serving 30+ years at the Indian Head Naval Base, Indian Head, MD. She worked part-time for the Charles County Board of Education, La Plata, Maryland for over three years.

She loved singing gospel and was a member of over six groups. She was known as "The Song Bird." She was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church, Fort Washington, MD. She was a Director of the Grace United Methodist Youth Gospel Chorus for 17 years and assisted the Methodist Youth Fellowship for 19 years. Her hobbies also included: shopping and cooking for family and friends. She was affectionately called "Honey" by grand and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph A. Waring and his eight children; two sisters: Agnes Washington and Sherrie Walker; three brothers: Jesse Colbert, Vernon Colbert and Raymond Colbert; eight sisters-in-law: Michelle Colbert, Denise Colbert, Nona Colbert, Barbara Ann Jameson, Madeline (Carter) Sylvie, Betty Carter, Ann Carter and Lorraine "Piney" Carter; five brothers-in-law: Dimples Walker, Carl "Piggy" Carter, Vincent Jameson and Numa Sylvie.

She was previously married to Joseph Kenny Carter (deceased) with whom she is survived by three children: Lisa Carter, Lionel Carter and Lynnette Carter; one son-in-law James "Virgil" Carter; one daughter-in-law Sharon Farmer Carter; five grandchildren: Delvon Spears, Monique Jackson, Mark Ferebee, Keith Carter and Imani Carter; two great grandchildren: Lil Von Spears and Ariyan Spears, and a host of step-grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Her viewing will be at Thornton's Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD, on Friday, January 16, 2009, from 6-9 p.m. and on Saturday, January 17, 9am until time of services 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 11700 Old Fort Road, Fort Washington, MD. The Interment will be Friday, January 23, at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD at 1:00 p.m.
