Ana Paula Pinto Pessoa de Amorim, passed away peacefully at the age of 57 the evening of December 8, 2020 in Bethesda, Maryland at the National Institutes of Health with her son and daughter at her side. She was born on March 16, 1963 in Coimbra, Portugal to Maria Antonia Soveral Pinto and José Manuel Patrocínio Pessoa de Amorim.

Paula grew up one of the oldest of many cousins and her childhood is filled with memories of time spent with them, at the Pinto's family farm and at Torre's beach with the Pessoa de Amorim's. Some of her childhood was also spent abroad in Angola Africa, and in Lisbon Portugal where there were many fond memories with her mother, father and brother.

With an unbridled passion for life and impossibly strong will, Paula immigrated to the United States at the age of 18 to make a life of her own. She and her ex-husband of 18 years, Charles Ray Thornton, raised their two children to be responsible and adventurous, have a strong work ethic, and always ask why? During the children's early childhood years she ran a home daycare to help her learn English. When the kids got older she worked nights to help support youth sports, programs and activities for the kids.

The second chapter of Paula's life is defined by self-awareness, spirituality, connectedness, and nature. She did whatever her heart desired. She danced, she traveled (even living in Costa Rica for a time), became an avid hiker (especially if there was a waterfall to find), a certified yoga instructor, a landlord, and bought a house boat to live on permanently. She immersed herself in self-betterment and a deep spirituality guided by love and her connection with the natural world. She loved all bodies of water—streams, rivers, lakes, and most of all, oceans.

Paula fought cancer for many years and while her spirit was at peace with her condition, her physical body could only withstand the toll of cancer forever. Paula lived out the final months of her life in Huntingtown, Maryland, on the Patuxent River with her son and daughter-in-law. However, her home was on the water at Lake Lanier in Georgia, and as for her heart, it was always with the ocean.

She is survived by her two children, her son and his wife Cody and Amanda Thornton, her daughter Tiffany; her six grandchildren, Kassidy, Catalina, Connor, Brooklynn, Chance, and Colton; her father José Pessoa de Amorim, and her three siblings, her oldest brother and his wife Eduardo and Isabel Pessoa de Amorim, and their two daughters Rita and Joana; her youngest brother, Francisco Pessoa de Amorim and her youngest sister Marta Pessoa de Amorim.

"Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed." — Antoine Lavoisier

"Each today, well-lived, makes yesterday a dream of happiness and each tomorrow a vision of hope. Look, therefore, to this one day, for it and it alone is life." —Sanskrit poem

"Even though the body appears to be material, it is not. In the deeper reality, your body is a field of energy, transformation and intelligence." — Deepak Chopra

No gifts or flowers are needed. Instead, Paula would prefer you express your love to those you value.

In addition, Paula did not want a funeral, but she would like a celebration of life. The family will communicate any plans, via Facebook, for a potential gathering in the spring/summer of 2021.

Please feel free to share memories, photos or written accounts, of all the good times and positive energy shared over the years here on this web page.
