Hugh Kyle Bowen, 94, of Aquasco, MD departed this life on Friday, November 13, 2020 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, Maryland. He was born on April 22, 1926 in Jonesville, VA to the late, Alonzo Jason Bowen and Mary (Harris) Bowen.

Hugh was one of seven children who grew up on a farm in southern Virginia. He was taught the value of life and hard work from an early age. His father died when he was 14 yrs. old and the farm was sold. He then worked on a dairy farm in Ellicott City, MD. Hugh joined the United States Navy in November, 1944 when he was eighteen (18). Being a proud American he was decorated for his accomplishments as a gunner on an air craft carrier and left the navy with an honorable discharge. After the war, Hugh came back and worked for the Baltimore Transit Company as a streetcar and bus driver. While driving the bus he spotted a beautiful Italian woman waiting for her bus to work. On his day off he swept her up in his fancy convertible, fell in love, married and had two daughters Rose and Kylia.

Hugh spent many years working on the railroad as a conductor/ brakeman. On one tragic day while checking on his crewmen, one week prior to his retirement, he was thrown from the back of the train and was horrifically injured, losing his legs. Even through all his pain he maintained his positivity about his injuries and life. He was strong willed and accepted what life threw at him. He loved railroading and spent many lonely nights away from home. He often mimicked the train whistle and listened to railroad songs that he seemed to relate to. Never one to happily sit by and miss the action. Throughout the years he drove motorcycles and fast cars. If you were to ask him what he cherished most in life the list was easy, his daughters, beautiful women, his 1972 Super Glide Harley Davidson, his Mustang 5.0, his tractor and the log home he built. Whether you knew him as Hugh, Hugh Kyle, Bow, Pops, Pop-Pop, "Wild One", or Baby Hughie, you knew an amazing, incredible generous man who saw the best in people even the worst of them.

Hugh had a great sense of humor, an ability to sense a person's character and an abundance of thankfulness. Hugh made a lasting impact on every life he touched. He got along with everyone and made friends easily. They say the legacy a man leaves behind is in the memories you share and the joy remembered. When you think of Hugh, smile and know he felt blessed to call you a friend. As he once told his daughter, "Hell, I reckon…I enjoyed my life." May he rest in eternal peace and burn up the streets in heaven with his fast cars and train whistle.

Hugh is survived by his daughters, Rose Marie Bowen of Severna Park, MD and Kylia Ann Bowen (Lee Bollhorst) of Severna Park, MD; one grandson, Kyle Anthony Bollhorst (Robyn); and three (3) great-grandchildren, Sienna Lynn, Beau Hendrix and Mia Rose. He is also survived by his youngest sister, Betty Collins of Charlotte, NC and many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Harold, Annalee, Ruth, Eppie and Dan.

The family will receive friends for Hugh's Life Celebration on Saturday, November 21, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Brinsfield Funeral Home & Crematory, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. and officiated by Deacon Bill Kyte, at Brinsfield Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow immediately at Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3221 Mattawoman Beantown Road, Waldorf, MD 20601.
