James Arlo Bowie, Jr. passed away unexpectedly at his home on June 18, 2020 with his wife, Lucy, by his side.

Arlo was born at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. on January 24, 1938. He was a 1955 graduate of LaPlata High School. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lucy (Grissom) Bowie; Brother: Larry Bowie (Linda); Daughters: Sharon Hile (Gene); Karen Coombs (Harolly); Sandi Bowie (Dale); Grandchildren: Brandon Coombs (Kelly); Shannon Allor (Tim); Stephen Rieman (Amanda); Stephanie Benton (Brent); Amanda Hile (Scott); Brittany Zywusko (Ben); Heather Davis (Sonny); Taylor Franklin (Richard); Carla O'Neal (Rob); and Tara Havrilla (Drew); 22.5 Great-grandchildren and two Great-great grandchildren.

Before graduating from LaPlata High School, Arlo joined the D.C. Air National Guard which began his life career with the U.S. Air Force. He worked and served our country for 36 years. Upon his retirement in 1995, he was awarded the AF Logistics Readiness Staff Senior Civilian Manager of the Year. The award was renamed the James A. Bowie, Jr. in his honor.

Arlo loved to travel. When he retired, his plan was to have his and Lucy's picture taken on the capitol steps of all 50 states. His goal was accomplished in 2012. As they traveled in their motorhome, they met and worshipped with people each Sunday all over the U.S. This was one of the many highlights of their week. He enjoyed sharing his travel experiences with anyone who would listen.

Arlo asked Jesus in his heart and life when he was 17 years of age. In 1961, he began at Potomac Heights Baptist Church when our daughter asked him, "Dad why don't you come to church with us?" That was the beginning of his Christian journey. After a rededication of his life, he began serving the Lord, by using his God given talent to sing. He joined the choir, started a baseball team, served as bus director, served many years as Sunday School director and taught adults in Sunday School. He wanted everyone to know the Lord through bible study. He began a campground worship service at Goose Bay Marina. For 20 years, Arlo led the singing while Mark Hashagen, Pastor of Welcome Baptist Church preached the Gospel. After 40 years serving at PHBC, we joined First Baptist Church of LaPlata.

Arlo loved his family. Lucy was the love of his life. He was so proud of his three daughters and their families. Spending time and traveling with his grandchildren brought much enjoyment to his life.
