Professor Emeritus V. Phillips Weaver, a faculty member of the University of MD, College of Education in College Park for 30 years, died on Monday, November 17, 2008 in La Plata, MD. The son of Mr. F. Emmett Weaver and Mrs. Isabel Phillips Weaver, he was a native of Harrisburg, PA where he spent his childhood.

Dr. Weaver attended the College of William and Mary, where he was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1951. He taught elementary school for several years and then completed his Doctorate in Education at the PA State University in 1962. Dr. Weaver joined the education faculty of the University of MD in 1962, where he rose to the rank of Professor and served as Department Head, assuming numerous roles of leadership. He was the author of a series of widely-used elementary school social studies textbooks, published by Silver Burdette, as well as numerous other scholarly publications. He mentored and inspired many graduate students in education who remain grateful for Dr. Weaver's support and the high standards that he set. Dr. Weaver was especially interested in intercultural learning experiences. He traveled widely with his family and studied school systems in Hungary, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Greece.

An avid aficionado of the arts, Dr. Weaver was a patron of the Baltimore Opera Company and the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC where he served as a docent for many years following his retirement. He actively supported the National Building Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, and the National Cathedral, also located in Washington, DC. Dr. Weaver was a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Historical Society of Harrisburg, PA. Always active politically, he was particularly supportive of those tenets upon which the Democratic Party is built, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union, of which he was proud to be a "card-carrying member." Dr. Weaver sang in several church choirs and was a supporter of many charitable organizations.

Dr. Weaver's survivors include his wife of 11 years, Anne Skone Jameson Weaver; three children, Dr. Scott C. Weaver, Ms. Tamea Weaver Bowen, and Ms. Virginia Weaver Marquess; a sister, Ms. Barbara Weaver Beisel; and six grandchildren. His wife of 34 years, Barbara Baum Weaver, died in 1989.
