![]() Ernest "Ernie" F. Landers, Sr., 69, a roofer with Boone Roofing in White Plains, MD, died November 14 at Civista Medical Center in La Plata, MD. His body surrendered after a heroic fight with pancreatic cancer.
Mr. Landers served in the United States Army as a Military Police officer from 1956 to 1963. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union for 37 years, working on on major public works programs throughout New York State. He served as an active member of the American Legion, a volunteer fireman, as a volunteer leader of community events for the town of Conklin, New York, and ran the company until his relocation to Maryland in 2004. Born in Syracuse, New York on January 18, 1939, he is predeceased by his parents, Harry and Christina Landers, and sister Beverly. He has a surviving sister, Myrtle Santachi of Pulaski, NY. He is survived by his former wife of 44 years, Jane Marsaw Landers and their four children, Ernest F. Landers, Jr. of Conklin, NY, Arnold G. Landers and his partner Anthony Hutcherson of Port Tobacco, MD, Laura J. Landers of Binghamton, NY, and Scott M. Landers and his wife Janelle of Kirkwood, NY, and good family friend, John Reese. He will be greatly missed by his beloved grandchildren, Michelle, Matthew, Ernest, Jenessa, and Chelsea, along with many other relatives and friends. Besides his dedication to so many years of hard work, his passion of racing was among his greatest joys in life. While fighting cancer, re rallied to attend his final race in Martinsville, VA on October 19, 2008 with his family and friends. A memorial service will be held in New York at a later date.
