Margaret Mary Smith Upright, 106, of La Plata, MD passed away peacefully on July 25, 2019 at Genesis Eldercare surrounded by her family. Born in Washington, DC on December 25, 1912 to the late John and Blanche Smith, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Ned L. Upright; infant son, Ned W. Upright; brothers, Howard Smith, John "Jack" Smith and William "Jake" Smith; sister, Barbara Martin and grandson, John Upright. After a long working career she retired from the Washington, DC National Guard. Margaret was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed walking, was an avid reader and loved her family dearly.

Margaret is survived by her sons, Ned L. Upright of Longs, SC and Gerald Upright (Mary Anne) of Clive, IA; grandchildren, Debra Wyant (Michael) of LaPlata, MD, Diane Upright of Nanjemoy, MD, Daniel Upright (Tina) of Mechanicsville, MD, Donald Upright (Melanie) of Port Tobacco, MD and Adam Upright (Amy) of Urbandale, IA; nine great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 from 10:00AM to 11:30AM at Arehart Echols Funeral Home, PA (211 St. Mary's Ave., LaPlata, MD); A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 30, ,2019 at 12:00PM at St. Catherine's Church (7685 Port Tobacco Rd., Port Tobacco, MD); Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery (8000 Woodyard Rd., Clinton, MD). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret's memory to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital (P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 143, Memphis, TN 38148).
