Barbara Eleanore "Poole" Shoemaker, 95, passed away September 23, 2008, at Charlotte Hall Veteran's Home. She was born January 28, 1913, in New York, NY.
Mrs. Shoemaker was a 1st Lieutenant with the U.S. Air Force and was the eighth original member of the WWII WAFS Air Force, 9th Squadron. Prior to serving in WWII, Mrs. Shoemaker attended and graduated from college. After the war she was a private flying instructor. She had her lifetime Master's in Bridge; was an avid bowler up to the age of 89; and sang with her local choir at Camelot Lakes in Sarasota, FL. She is survived by her daughter Barbara "GiGi" Gibbs of Richmond, VA; grandson, Dr. Michael Socher, U.S. Army, Knoxville, MD; granddaughter, Jennifer Mills, R.N., Ashland, VA; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Shoemaker donated her body to Howard University, Washington, DC, for research. Private services are being held. Arrangements provided by Raymond Funeral Service. |
