![]() Joseph Clarence Evans, Jr. (Kingfish, Pop Pop) was born on February 26, 1944, to the late Joseph Clarence Evans, Sr. and Sarah Turner. He departed his earthly home on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital.
Kingfish received his education through the St. Mary's Public Schools. Kingfish retired in 2005 after being employed at the Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship in Piney Point for over 25 years. Kingfish enjoyed hunting and rabbit hunting, fishing, going to dog meets and playing cards. He thought his four beagles (Cry Baby, Jack, Banjo and Snoop) were the best of rabbit dogs. During his younger years, he spent many nights at Budds Creek Raceway watching racecars with Mary Rose, Pam and Toeno. His favorite car was a 63 Chevy called the Calvert Shaker. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His past time was going to Medley's Garage in Loveville and every Sunday at Burchmart in Leonardtown to shoot the breeze with his friends. Kingfish had his ways about him. Don't ask a question if you were not ready to hear the answer, he would tell it like it is and didn't care if you like it or not, that was him. To our surprise, Kingfish had picked his own pallbearers with a memo that he did through his job back in 1997; he wanted his coworkers to carry him to his resting place. To cherish his memories, Kingfish leaves his lifetime companion of 40+ years, Mary Rose Young; one brother George M. Somerville, Sr. (Ruth); one daughter Pam Savoy (Silvester); three granddaughters, Tiara Baker, Latrice Blackwell and Samala Savoy; one aunt, Marie Young; his nieces Deborah Somerville and Barbara Somerville; his nephews, George Somerville, Jr. and Clarence Somerville; his great nephew, Ian Somerville; and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and son George (Toeno) Young. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 28, 2008 from 2:00 – 5:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, with Prayers being said at 3:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM in St. John's Catholic Church, Hollywood, MD with Fr. Raymond Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD. Pallbearers will be Sam Spalding, Jr., David Hammett, Mickey Hayden, Tommy Swann, Steve Pratt and Freddie Knott. Honorary pallbearers will be David Kane, Herbert Taylor, John Taylor, Mark Medley, Clarence Miles, Joseph Clark and Robert Short. Arrangements provided by the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A. |
