John Oscar Simpson, 90, of La Plata, Maryland died peacefully in his home on December 30, 2018 surrounded by his family. John was a U.S. Army veteran and a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Plata Md. He was a successful businessman, a skilled handyman and gardener and most importantly, a devoted husband and family man. Everything he did, he did for and with his family.

John was born to Robert L. and Annie A. Simpson on March 14, 1928 in Washington, DC. He was raised, along with his brother Robert, in Charles County Md. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in La Plata in 1946 and joined the U.S. Army in 1950. After the service, he returned home to Charles County and began his career. In 1954 John met the love of his life, Florence "Elaine" Moody of Indian Head, Maryland. They were engaged after a few months of courtship and married on February 19, 1955 at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Indian Head.

John was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Annie, and his brother Robert S. Simpson. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Elaine Simpson and their five children - John Michael Simpson (Lauren Sabino) of Richmond Va., Patrick Steven Simpson (Brenda) of Port Tobacco, Md., Mary Teresa Canter (Ron) of Leonardtown Md., Kathryn Elaine Balint (John) of Hagerstown, Md., and Paul Allen Simpson (Molly) of Charlotte Hall, Md. John also survived by sixteen grandchildren: Alexandra, Danielle, Regan, Maura, Sophie, Margaret, John P., Emily, Christopher, Ryan, Caroline, Emma, Maxwell, Samuel, Julia and John H. and five great-grandchildren, Isla, Noelle, Clara, Jude and Noah.

Friends Friday, January 4, 2019 from 9AM until Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, La Plata. Interment to follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery, La Plata. Memorial contributions may be made to SagePoint Senior Services Foundation or Hospice of Charles County or Alzheimer's Association. Pallbearers will be grandsons Ryan Canter, John P. Simpson, Samuel Simpson, Maxwell Balint, Christopher Simpson and John H. Simpson. Arrangements by Raymond Funeral Service.
