Reuben Bowen, 89, died August 19, 2008 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick. He was born September 27, 1918 in Huntingtown in the home where he presently lived with his wife of 66 years, Minnie Motley Bowen.

Reuben was the youngest of three sons born to William West and Mary Rebecca Hance Bowen, and was raised on a tobacco farm in rural Calvert County. He graduated from Calvert High School in 1936, and and married Minnie Motley on November 29, 1942.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on October 8, 1941 and served in the European Theater of Operations in Belgium during WWII. He was awarded the American Defense, European, African and Middle Eastern Service Medals and was discharged January 31, 1946 as a Staff Sergeant.

Reuben raised tobacco, and farmed all of his life. He also worked as a book-keeper for the Warren Denton Seafood Company at Broomes Island for thirty years. He was a life-long member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, and for many years was the sexton and caretaker of the cemetery records. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brothers Glenn and Kenneth Bowen. He is survived by his wife Minnie, a son David M. Bowen and daughter-in-law Valerie, and a grandson David A. Bowen.
