Mr. Spikes moved to Cordele, GA from Jefferson Barracks, MO in 1944. He joined the United States Air Force in 1948. He had a distinguished military career, including Electronics Expert, Special Air Missions, and Communications Expert on Air Force Two. His service included several tours of the Orient, one tour of Germany, and several tours within the United States. Sergeant Spikes retired in 1971 and at that time, moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He was an avid Ham Radio Operator, gun enthusiast, sailor and fisherman, as well as a wonderful father and grandfather. He was the director of the Scuba Club in Japan from 1956-9. He was an avid NRA supporter.

He was son of the late Carl R. Spikes and the late Mary Victoria Sleight Spikes.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Elizabeth Boyd Spikes of Gulfport, MS, one son, Darren Gary (Debbie) Spikes of Gulfport, MS, four daughters, Brenda (DeRoy) Lundell of Cannon Falls, MN, Pamela (Herbert) Vermillion of La Plata, MD, Susan Wright of Gulfport, MS, and Terry (Robert) Spikes, one brother, Kenneth (Miriam) Spikes of Cordele, GA, one sister, Carolyn Garrett of Cordele, GA. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2008 from 1-3pm at La Plata Church of Christ, 10495 Theodore Green Blvd., White Plains, MD 20695.

A Funeral Service will follow on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 3pm at La Plata Church of Christ. Clergy will be the Rev. Lance Riddick. Interment will be private.

Pallbearers will be Darren Spikes, Clint Wright, Michael Blanchard, Robert Wegner, James Vermillion, Alan and Greg Cecil. Honorary Pallbearers will be Christopher Wegner and United States Air Force Honor Guard.
