Mr. Murphy was a longtime farmer in Dentsville who enjoyed gardening, card playing, cutting grass on his tractor, and ice-cream. He always whistled while he worked. He most enjoyed being at home with family.

He was the son of the late Peter Murphy and the late Sadie Virginia Burroughs Murphy.

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Robert and Jimmy Murphy, and two sisters, Martina Hewitt and Valerie Murphy.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Thelma Shoemaker Murphy, two daughters, Patricia E. (Allen) Thomas of Charlotte Hall, MD, and Cheryl L. (Richard) Lehman of Charlotte Hall, MD, two sons, James R. (Patricia) Murphy, Sr. of Key Largo, FL, and Kenneth W. Murphy of Golden Beach, MD, one sister, Gladys Murray of La Plata, MD. Also survived by 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 10, 2008 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with Wake Service at 7pm at Raymond Funeral Chapel, La Plata, MD.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 10am at St. Mary's Church, Newport, MD.

Clergy will be the Msgr. Oliver McGready.

Interment will take place at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf, MD.
