Nellie Hance Cox, age 102, died July 2, 2008 at the Calvert County Nursing Center. She was born September 2, 1905 in the Prince Frederick area in Calvert County, where she was raised and attended the One Room Schoolhouse on Broomes Island Road.

She married James W. Cox October 17, 1934, and they made their home on the Cox family farm in Sunderland. She was a devoted homemaker and farm wife, and also worked part time at the Prince Frederick and Sunderland Post Offices. She loved working on the family farm, and was still gardening and stripping tobacco at the age of 95. She was a longtime member of Mt. Harmony United Methodist Church where she was active in the Womens' Society. She had been a resident of the Calvert Nursing Center in Prince Frederick for the past four years.

She was preceded in death by her husband James W. Cox in 1987, her parents George W. and Lydia Bowen Hance, a daughter Helen Jean Cox, sisters Evelyn Bowen, Mary Ogden, Violet Hall, Hazel Hance, Annie Fairbanks, Irene Hance and Milded Hardesty, and brothers George William Hance, Jr. and John S. Hance. She is survived by her son Donald W. Cox and his wife Barbara Jean, granddaughters Dona B. Ostenso and Leigh Ann Cox, and a great-grandson Andrew Ostenso.
