On July 8, 1961, he married the love of his life, Mary Lou Simpkins, at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Town Creek, MD. Together, they celebrated more than 55 loving and devoted years of marriage.

James was employed for 30 dedicated years by the State of Maryland at St. Mary's College of Maryland and retired as an HVAC Mechanic in 1995. In retirement, he and his wife enjoyed crabbing everyday during the season. He ran the motor while she caught the crabs! James took great pride in keeping his 1966 Ford Fairlane in immaculate condition. He was a notably good dancer and enjoyed playing the Martin guitar that he had saved up to buy in 1960. Although he worked hard from sun up to sun down, he also took time to for his family and friends. In recent years, James looked forward to gathering with friends over breakfast at McDonalds on a regular basis. He was a remarkable man, uncomplicated, hardworking, proud yet humble, with an admirable inner strength and enduring commitment to provide for his family.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Lou, his 4-legged "little girl" Katie (Maltese), and their children: Bonnie Wimberly (Randy) of St. Inigoes, MD; Judy Berce of Clearwater, FL; Patty Simpkins of Avenue, MD; and James (Jimmy) Simpkins, Jr. (Kim) of Leonardtown, MD. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Shelby Wimberly and Bridget Wimberly of St. Inigoes, MD as well as other extended family members and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles E. Davis and Lena Wildenberger.
