Joan Elizabeth Long, 85, of Mechanicsville, MD passed away on January 5, 2016 at her home. Born on August 16, 1930 in Saranac Lake, NY she was the daughter of the late Frances F. Newell and Blake Newell. Joan was the loving wife of the late John Richard Long who preceded her in death on December 28, 1996.

Joan is survived by her children: John R. Long (Robin) of Newburg, MD, James W. Long of Mechanicsville, MD, David G. Long (Rose) of Oakville, MD, Kenny L. Long ( Ginger) of Mechanicsville, MD, Freddy Long (Debbie) of Hermanville, MD, 12 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Siblings: Nancy Quade, of Oraville, MD, Nora Newell of Paul Smiths, NY. She was preceded in death by her daughter in law Pat Long, and sisters; Joyce Burch and Gale Martin.

She graduated from Margret Brent and Westminster College and was a St. Mary's county, MD resident. Joan was a social service worker for St. Mary's County Department of Social Services. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 11:00 AM in Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD with Pastor Ann Strickler officiating. Arrangements provided by Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home.
