![]() Shirley Christine Dickey, 80, of Hollywood, MD passed away June 25, 2015 at the Solomons Nursing Center at Solomons, MD. Shirley was born April 28, 1935 to loving parents, Elmer Aloysius and Elizabeth Anne (Bean) Stone who lived in the town of Pearson, MD along with her 2 sisters, Betty Ann, Mary Ellen, and brother Elmer. The town of Pearson was located on the property now owned by the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. After the Navy assumed their property, her family moved to Leonardtown where her father continued his tenant farming. Shirley is pre-deceased by her parents, and her brother Elmer.
After graduating from Margaret Brent High School, Shirley worked for the AT&T Telephone Company as a telephone operator, then as a teacher's aide to kindergarten classes at Banneker Elementary School in Leonardtown. Shirley married James Aubrey Mayor, Sr. (1956) and together they had four children – James A. Mayor Jr. (Theresa), Brian Mayor, John Mayor and Anne (Mayor) Knott. James Sr. passed away due to an unfortunate accident (1961). Shirley married Daniel Terraillon Dickey (1971) – together they had one child Daniel T. Dickey III (Angela). Shirley has 5 grandchildren – Christine Spratt (Joel), Amy Mayor, Emily Sauter (Ross), Mason and Evan Dickey; and 5 Great Grandchildren. Shirley was a very loving, devoted and family oriented homemaker. She was most comfortable when children were around. Her favorite seasonal period was Christmas where she would decorate the house with several manger and Christmas scenes for the children to learn the meaning of Christmas. Early Christmas morning before the kids woke up; she would make sure a doll representing the baby Jesus was placed in a manger outside. On Christmas mornings she would sit back and watch with a smile as her grandchildren and great grandchildren scrambled amongst flying paper and shouts to open their presents. Shirley was noted for her award winning bread and butter pickles, her very much in demand Jell-O Salad, crab cakes and stuffed ham which were always prepared for the holidays. Shirley enjoyed cooking, playing cards and board games, pulling handles at Dover Downs (only if she won), and playing games with children. The children of our extended relatives in various States and Europe were not excluded from Christmas celebration as they also received gifts of love. She dedicated her days to babysitting for family and enjoyed babysitting her oldest granddaughter Christine, and April (Tippett) Roberts (Jeff) whom Shirley considered one of her grandchildren and a member of the Dickey family. The family will receive friends at the Mattingley-Gardner Funeral Home, 41590 Fenwick Street, Leonardtown, Maryland on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 from 5-8 PM with prayers scheduled for 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at St. John Francis Regis Parish at 43950 St. Johns Rd., Hollywood, MD 20636 July 1, 2015 at 10 AM with interment at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.
