Elsie Lucile Richards, age 93, of Waldorf, MD passed away on June 21, 2015 at the Charles County Hospice House in Waldorf, MD. Elsie was born on March 15, 1922 in Waldorf, MD to the late John Samuel Vernon and Grace (Hamilton) Vernon. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Charles Richards; her brothers, John, Spike, and Clark Vernon.
She is survived by her children, Mary Frances (Mooreland) Burkett and John Edward Welch and his wife Patsy; her sister, Mae Howard; her brothers, Charles Vernon and his wife Hattie and Sam Vernon; and her grandchildren, John Welch and his wife Sarah, Timothy Welch and his wife Luci, Bill Welch and his wife Alicia, Rhonda McGraw and her husband John, David Perkins, and Dee Altamarino and her husband Pedro. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and four nieces. Elsie began her career as a waitress for Louis Groves. She later worked at the Old Ryons Store in Waldorf as a clerk. She also worked at the Waldorf Department Store for Harry Weiner. She retired from the Ben Franklin 5&10 where she worked for Ben Weiner. This span of her career totaled 43 years. She volunteered at the Polls in Waldorf for many years and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal "Piney Church." She and her husband loved to play cards with their family and friends almost every Friday night. When her health was good, she loved to travel and her favorite place was the Amish Dutch Country in Lancaster, PA. She met many people when she traveled and stayed in touch with them over the years. Most of all, she loved flowers and her flower garden. Elsie was a loving and kind person whom was loved and cared about by all that met her. We were truly blessed to have had her as a mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, family member, and friend. Friends will be received on Sunday, June 28, 2015 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM with Prayers at 7PM at Raymond Funeral Service Chapel, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646. Funeral Service on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 11AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church "Piney Parish", Waldorf, MD. Interment at the church cemetery.
