Oliver Howard Tipton, 95, of Owings, MD, formerly of Green Meadows, Hyattsville, MD and Washington DC died on April 5, 2008.

He was born on July 9, 1912 in Washington DC, a son of Jacob Samuel Tipton and Lydia Margaret Gallehugh of Culpeper County, Virginia.

As a young man, he was locally well known in the 1930s as a basketball player. He worked for the Huerich Brewing Co., the Washington Cab Association and he retired from the District of Columbia Highway Department as an inspector.

Oliver married Harriet (Hattie Lee) Harrell in March of 1938 and they raised their family in both Washington DC and Hyattsville, MD. Harriet died in 1971, and Oliver moved to Calvert County to be closer to his sons Dennis and Gary in 1976.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife Harriet (Hattie Lee) Harrell Tipton; a daughter, Carol Ann Tipton and an infant daughter; his sisters Nellie Elizabeth Daniels and Elsie May Scroggins; and a brother, Roy M. Tipton.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Donald H. Tipton of Millsboro, DE and his former wife Kathy Tipton of Lewes, DE; Gary E. and Joyce Tipton of Huntingtown, MD; Dennis J. and Evelyn W. Tipton of Owings, MD; Thomas E. and Elyse Tipton of Portland, ME; and John M. and Rhonda Jill Tipton of Laurel, MD. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

"Granddad" was loved dearly and will be forever missed by all, but his family knows that he is finally in heaven with "Nana."

A private graveside service will be held at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood.
