"Jack" Hurd, 73, a retired police officer with the District Heights police force; former director of computer services for the Secretary of Commerce, and a credentialed federal officer for the secretary; and two-term campaign manager, administrative director, and trusted council to sheriff Rex Coffey of the Charles County Sheriff's Office. A man of great character and integrity, Jack approached each aspect of his life with a dedication and strength rarely known.
Jack Hurd of Waldorf, Maryland died at his home on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Born on December 26, 1941 into a coal mining family in Mount Hope, West Virginia, Jack overcame many obstacles to become a police officer in District Heights, Maryland from 1966-1972. He eventually transitioned to the federal government where he dedicated twenty-three years to the service of his country. He retired from government service in 1995 as a federal executive, and took on post-retirement work as a special police officer for the Hampshire Neighborhood Association. Soon after, he became campaign manager for aspiring sheriff candidate, Rex Coffey. After the sheriff's successful election, Jack accepted an appointment to the sheriff's command staff. Jack is preceded in death by parents Faye Arlene and James Elgie Hurd; brother James, and nephew Robert. He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Sharon Micoly Hurd, a son, two daughters, and four grandchildren. Visitation on Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 11:30AM until time of Masonic Service at 12 Noon followed by family and friends reflections at Raymond Funeral Service, P.A. 5635 Washington Avenue La Plata, MD 20646. Interment to follow at Christ Church Wayside Cemetery in Newburg, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to support the research of Dr. Sam Denmeade, at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.
