George Alvin Grover, 101, of Lusby died March 17, 2008, at The Hermitage. He was born June 5, 1906, in Wallville to the late George Richard and Ida Priscilla Monnett Grover.

A lifelong Calvert County resident, Cap'n Alvin never ventured very far from his Lusby home place and the waters of St. Leonard Creek and the Patuxent River. From the age of twelve well into his eighties, he reaped abundant harvests of tobacco, watermelons, sweet potatoes, and vegetables from the land; and oysters, fish, and crabs from the water. He relied on the tobacco and oysters to make a living; but generously shared watermelons and sweet potatoes with friends, family, and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty one years, Ada Laveille Grover; his brothers Melvin Owen Grover, Sr. and Earl Norman Grover, who died at a very young age; his sisters Ida Elizabeth Gibson and Anne Estelle Grover; dear friend Oliver Foote; and a niece Eva Grover Squires.

He is survived by a niece Ruth Grover Dixon and a nephew Melvin Owen Grover, Jr. and his wife Becky Denton Grover all of Lusby; three great nephews, five great nieces; three great great nephews, two great great nieces, and a special friend Margaret Ward. Pallbears will be Mel O. Grover III, Ryan Grover, James Oliver Foote, George "Jackie" Bowen, Donald Zinn, Tommy Zinn, and an honorary pallbearer Harry Zinn.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul united Methodist Church, 11000 H.G. Trueman Road, Lusby, MD 20657.

For many decades, Alvin was head usher as St. Paul United Methodist Church and is well remembered for his greetings to newcomers and long time members alike. He continued this tradition during the six and a half years he lived at the hermitage by greeting staff, visitors, and residents every day.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 21, 2008 from 2 PM – 5 PM at the Rausch Funeral Home, 20 American Lane, Lusby, MD and Saturday, March 22, 2008 from 9 AM – 11 AM in St. Paul United Methodist Church, 11000 H. G. Trueman Road, Lusby, MD where a funeral service will be held at 11 AM with his nephew Pastor Melvin Grover and Rev Ron Collier officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
