![]() On Sunday, November 16, 2014, 74, of Waldorf, MD passed away at the University of MD Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, MD of a liver disease that she had battled for more than 20 years at Johns Hopkins University Hospital and in the Georgetown University Liver transplant program.
She was born on June 23, 1940 at Frostburg, MD to Evan and Leona Meagher Layman. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Marvin J. Vann. They have three daughters, Kimberly Ayn Wilkins, Dorian Lyn Beetle (Darryl), and Melissa Jean Randell (Kurt). In addition she was the grandmother of eight that included Steven Dilley, Emily Wilkins, Lane Dilley, Nathan Wilkins, Casey Beetle, Tyler Beetle, Elijah J. Randell, and Kendall Beetle. Her brother Larry Layman (Pat) and a special cousin Carol Lease (Kenny) are also survivors. She had three nieces and a nephew. Sally was a graduate of the Frostburg State University where she was the 1961 Homecoming Queen and was elected to Who' s Who in American Colleges and Universities. She also graduated with a Masters Degree from The George Washington University. She was a teacher of mathematics for 38 years in the Prince Georges County school system. She taught at Francis Scott Key Jr. High School, Lord Baltimore Middle School, and Frederick Douglass Sr. High School. She also taught math classes in the extension programs for the College of Southern MD and classes for the University of MD extension in Waldorf. She had worked as a leader with the 4-H and Girl Scouts when her daughters were young. She remained active in later days with the Charles County Sr. Center and was involved with various exercise programs. Sally made numerous friends and maintained contact with childhood friends, teaching colleagues, neighbors, and exercise friends who visited her and provided comfort during her extended periods of confinements in the hospital. Visitation was on Thursday, November 20, 2014 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM with a Funeral Service at 7PM at the Raymond Funeral Service Chapel, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646. A private burial will be at the Siebert Cemetery in Fort Valley in Shenandoah County, VA. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the American Liver Foundation.
