LA PLATA, Md. (Oct. 10, 2007)—The second suspect in last Wednesday's murder of Joseph Gilford Hickman, 71, of Waldorf turned himself in to the Charles County Sheriffs Office yesterday at 6:40 p.m. William Nathaniel Coates (pictured at top left), 29, of Bryantown, was charged with first-degree murder and other related crimes and is being held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center.
Coates is the second suspect arrested in the murder. On Friday, Oct. 5, James Francis Swann, 32, of Reistertown, Md., was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and other related crimes. On Sunday, Oct. 7, deputies obtained the arrest warrant for Coates.
The investigation began when sheriffs deputies responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 3300 block of Ryon Court on Oct. 3 at 7:48 p.m. and found Hickman lying on the front porch with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives have not released any information regarding the alleged motive. However, they do say that the murder was not random.
Det. C. Shankster is investigating.
