Charles Police Now Looking For Second Suspect in Waldorf Murder

William Nathaniel Coates, 29, of Bryantown. Coates, also known as “REDZ” is wanted for first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, use of a handgun in commission of a felony and possession of a handgun in last Wednesday's murder of Waldorf resident Joseph Gilford Hickman.
LA PLATA, Md. (Oct. 9, 2007) -- The Charles County Sheriff’s Office just announced this morning that they are seeking a second suspect in last Wednesday's murder of Joseph Gilford Hickman, 71, of Waldorf. The man has been identified as William Nathaniel Coates, 29, of Bryantown.

On Oct. 5, the first suspect, James Francis Swann, 32, of Reistertown, Md., was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and other related charges.

Police have still not announced a motive for the murder.

On Sunday, Oct. 7, Charles County deputies obtained an arrest warrant for the second suspect, William Nathaniel Coates. Coates, also known as “REDZ” is wanted for first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, use of a handgun in commission of a felony and possession of a handgun.

Anyone with information about Coates’ whereabouts is asked to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at 301-609-6513 during business hours or 301-932-2222 after hours. Information may also be provided to Charles County Crime Solvers by calling 1-866-411-TIPS. Crime Solvers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to Coates’ arrest. Police say that all callers may remain anonymous.

Det. C. Shankster of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating this case.
