CBL is a marine research facility of the University of Maryland System's Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies (CEES). CBL was founded in 1925 by Dr. Reginald V. Truitt, and is located on the Western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, 60 miles SSE of Washington, D.C. A mid-Bay location at the mouth of the Patuxent River places it within easy reach of diverse aquatic and terrestrial habitats in one of the world's largest - and well studied - estuarine systems.

The Florida Tech has provided graduate education in the Southern Maryland area since 1972. Located near the Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md., Florida Tech offers graduate programs in Business/Management, Computer Science, and Engineering. The programs are designed to allow working professionals an opportunity to maintain professional and technical competence, while earning a graduate degree, without career interruption. Twelve graduate programs are available, and students also have the option to take courses via distance learning (internet-based courses). Prospective students are encouraged to stop by the graduate center to speak with an academic advisor regarding admission and course requirements.
