Civil Air Patrol, the official Air Force Auxiliary, is a nonprofit organization. It performs more than 85 percent of inland search and rescue missions in the continental United States as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center at Langley AFB, Virginia. Volunteers also take a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to America's youths through CAP Cadet Programs. Civil Air Patrol's Cadet Programs provides a structured program for youth, from sixth grade through age 20. The program encompasses 16 achievement levels that include study in four areas - aerospace education, physical training, leadership, and moral and ethical values. Upon completion of each achievement, the cadet earns increased cadet rank, decorations, awards, eligibility for national and international special activities, and an opportunity for flight and academic scholarships. The Southern Maryland Search and Rescue Dogs, Inc. (SMASARD) was formed in July, 1992. Our purpose as a non-profit organization is to provide volunteer search and rescue using canines and emergency medical care as indicated. On January 1, 1993, SMSARD went in-service with the St. Mary's County Emergency Operations Center, located in Leonardtown, Maryland. January 16, 1993, we were activated for our first search - to locate an 8-year old boy that was missing from his home near Lexington Park, Maryland. November 1995, we assisted the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and the Naval Investigative Service in locating the body of a murder victim at the St. Mary's County Landfill. As of January 1, 1997, SMSARD has participated in 36 searches in both St. Mary's and Calvert Counties, with 2 searches being criminal in nature.
