For many years, Calvert County did not employ a cash economy. Barter was an important method of exchange - eggs for salt and sugar, chickens for pork and beef, etc. World War II brought a shift to cash as the medium of exchange but agriculture continues to be a big part of the culture of Calvert County, Maryland. This informative website provides information on local farms, agricultural products available for sale, organizations and businesses that offer services to the farming community, and related news. The site is maintained by the Calvert County Department of Economic Development.[ Last Updated: 27-Jun-2006 | Hits: 256 | Reader Comments Report Problem

Late spring markets include items like bedding plants (vegetable, herbs and flowers), hanging baskets and tasty salad greens, asparagus, kale and strawberries. Markets will include many of the favorite vendors from last year with plenty of fresh produce, baked goods, seafood and cut flowers.
Calvert County farmers markets are unique because each is a producer-only market. The vendors are only allowed to sell produce raised by a local farmer and each market sells products that are regionally available seasonally.
All county farmers markets accept WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers from the Maryland Department of Agriculture.

The Home Grown Farm Market is a producer only market aimed at providing fresh produce, flowers, plants, meats, cheeses and baked goods to the Southern Maryland community while promoting sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture requires economic viability, eco-friendly production techniques that preserve water and soil resources, limited transportation of food and dependence on fossil fuels, and a strong connection between the producers and the consumers.
The market carries a large selection of veggies from all around the county, frozen meats from the Southern Maryland area, and Maryland ice cream and cheese. You can also find cheese from Clover Hill Dairy, and Amish dairy in Mechanicsville.
Spring Season: April 5 - June 14: Saturdays Only, 9am-1pm
Peak Season: June 18 - November 1: Wednesdays, 10am-4pm; Saturdays, 9am-1pm
Winter Season: November 8 - December 27: Saturdays Only, 9am-1pm
Market accepts cash, credit and debit cards, EBT and WIC vouchers.

In 1972, the Maryland General Assembly approved legislation establishing the Maryland Department of Agriculture on the basis of agriculture's growing importance and impact to the economy of the state. A year later, the Maryland Department of Agriculture became a full fledged part of state operations. Many activities of the MDA are regulatory in nature, others are assigned to a category of public service and some are educational or promotional in scope. All are intended to provide the maximum protection possible for the consumer as well as promote the economic well-being of farmers, food and fiber processors and businesses engaged in agricultural related operations.[ Last Updated: 02-Oct-2004 | Hits: 210 | Reader Comments Report Problem
