Date: 9/1/2016
Start Time: 8:00 AM
End Time: 4:30 PM (08:30 Duration)

The Patuxent Partnership will host a day-long program, "Harnessing the Power of Data to Enable Warfighting Superiority" on Thursday, September 1, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center. A reception will follow at Bollywood Masala.

Rear Adm. Michael Manazir, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Warfare Systems (OPNAV, N9) will be the keynote speaker at 8:00 a.m. The first panel, "Big Data: A Game Changer for the Navy," will include Rear Adm. (sel) Carl Chebi, Vice Commander, Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) and Ms. Leslie Taylor, Executive Director, Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division/Deputy Assistant Commander, Test and Evaluation, NAVAIR as well as representatives from Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR).

Bill "Roto" Reuter, R-Squared Solutions, will moderate the second panel, "Applying Outside Solutions to Big Data Challenges," with Paul Reynolds, Senior Director, Information Architect, U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and representatives from PwC, Hortonworks and IBM.

The final panel, "Creating a Vision of What's Possible with Big Data," will be moderated by Rear Adm. (ret) Steve Eastburg, TPP Board of Directors, Smartronix. Panelists will include Dr. Kirk Borne, Principal Data Scientist, Booz Allen Hamilton; Mark Ryland Chief Architect, Amazon and representatives from SanDisk, Microsoft and OpenText.

Mr. Garry Newton, Deputy Commander, NAVAIR will provide closing remarks to close the day.

Big Data is becoming an increasingly popular topic. Both large and small companies can benefit from the increased data gathering to improve their capabilities, according to data expert, Kevin Daum. "If managed well, data can be powerful, but used incorrectly, it can take you down a rabbit hole or eat up precious resources," he said.

In a recent Inc. article, James Kerr, N2Growth, defined Big Data as a general term for the processes and automated tools related to the search, capture, storage, curation, analysis and visualization of data. Kerr says that Big Data is about making sense of data in ways that improves decision making confidence, enables trend identification and leverages information in means that provide new insights that can be used to do such things as fight disease, prevent crime and deliver a business edge.

A complete agenda, cost and exhibitor opportunities are available at paxpartnership.org/events. Pre-registration is required.

The Patuxent Partnership works with government, industry and academia on initiatives in science and technology, hosts programs of interest to NAVAIR and the broader DoD community, supports workforce development including education initiatives and professional development.
