Virginia M. Gates, 92, formerly of Silesia, MD died peacefully March 23, 2013 at Asbury Solomons Retirement Community, Solomons, MD. Born June 15, 1920 in Charles County, MD, she was the daughter of Townley and Mary Margaret Pickeral.

Virginia worked for many years as a school bus driver for the Prince Georges County Department of Transportation.

She loved quilting, choral singing and relaxing at her beach cottage in Valley Lee, MD. She was a member of the Maryland Jousting Association, the Asbury Solomons Church Choir and a volunteer for the Benevolent Fund at Asbury.

Virginia was predeceased by 3 brothers and 3 sisters, and her late husband Laurence Theodore Gates who died in 1970.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda Weimer (Stanley) of Annapolis, MD and Julie Hughes (Terry) of Mechanicsville, MD; sisters, Naomi Nelson of Richmond, VA and Audrey Ritter (Harry) of LaPlata, MD; 5 grandchildren, Jeffrey and Matthew Weimer, Ellen Dowd, Wesley and Mark Hughes; and 10 great granddaughters.

The family will receive friends for a gathering on Thursday, March 28, 2013 from 5:00 - 8:00p.m. at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD. 20622. Burial will take place on Friday, March 29, 2013 at 4:30p.m. at Christ Church Cemetery, Accokeek, MD followed by a Funeral Service at 6:00p.m. at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home. The Rev. Meredith Syler will officiate. Pallbearers will be Wesley Hughes, Mark Hughes, Jeffrey Weimer, Ellen Dowd, Matthew Weimer, and Amanda Hughes.
