Betty Jean Smallwood was born the eleventh out of twelve blessings to Mary L Wills and the late James L Smallwood. She was welcomed to the world on April 25th, 1967 in Bel Alton, MD. For 53 years she enjoyed most of her time being with family. She was called to her heavenly home on Thursday, November 12, 2020.
Betty attended St Ignatius Catholic Church, early on in life and has always stayed grounded on her Catholic upbringing. Betty attended Charles County Public school and graduated from Maurice J. McDonough High School in 1985. For a number of years, Betty was employed at Fort Washington Health and Rehabilitation Center until her cancer Diagnosis in 2016. In August of 1994 Betty was overjoyed to welcome her only child, her son, Thomas into the world. Betty and Thomas were inseparable, as he was her pride and joy.
Betty was a devoted Mother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt and Friend. She was a true care giver at heart. Betty was always known for always coming to the rescue of her son, parents and siblings, whenever they were in need. She was known for being "the boss" as her late father James Smallwood would say. Even with a million things on her plate Betty made sure she never missed a holiday, birthday or family celebration. Betty enjoyed the peace of the beach with her cousins. Betty had several hobbies, but none outweighed spending time with her parents and sisters, whether it was going shopping, to the movies or simply styling their hair.
Betty was proceeded in death by her father James Smallwood; two sisters: Yvonne Smallwood and Barbara Wood; one brother: James "Boone" Smallwood. To cherish her memories, Betty leaves behind one son: Thomas Yates Jr; two sisters: Polly Smallwood and Patsy Boyden; five brothers: Thomas Smallwood, John Smallwood, James "Ricky" Smallwood, Roger Lee Smallwood and Michael Smallwood; two sisters-in-law's: Brenda Smallwood and Fontella Smallwood; one brother-in-law: Mark Boyden; one godson: Joshua Smallwood and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends whom all loved her dearly.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
2 Timothy 4:7-8.
