David attended Hampton University for a short time, but ultimately decided to join the U.S. Navy. He completed his three years of military service during the Korean War on the USS Battleship New Jersey. David was honorably discharged and years later the USS New Jersey battleship was commissioned in New Jersey and David went to visit it. Upon arrival, the tour guide said he knew more about the ship and had him conduct the remainder of the tour.

Upon his return from the service, he met the love of his life, Irene, and married her on July 6, 1963. They raised their children and lived in Port Tobacco until the time of his death. David and Irene celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013 where they renewed their vows.

David worked at the Naval Ordnance Station (NOS), Indian Head, MD until his retirement in 1989. He was affectionately known as "DAP" by friends and family. During his years at NOS, DAP would arrive to work early to set up for the card game they played until it was time to report for work. He was an avid crabber and continued crabbing up until the decline of his health. He was known to wear his US Navy ball cap, red suspenders and could often be seen pulling the infamous "Dragon" boat down to Friendship and Benedict for a day of crabbing.
