Patuxent River Karate (PRK) has a long history. It is the oldest dojo teaching Shorin-ryu Matsumura Orthodox karate and kobudo in the United States. We teach traditional Okinawan karate and kobudo. PRK meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1730 to 1930 hours with optional or make up classes on Saturday, 1000 to 1200 hours. The Pax River Aikikai operates at Action Tae Kwon Do (the "Ballet Caliente" building). Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art with roots in ju-jitsu and swordsmanship. There is no conflict in aikido, but rather one utilizes one's opponents own energy against him, resulting in a throw or pin.
Classes are open for adults age 14 and over, and for children age 7-13. Classes are currently Mondays through Fridays from 5:30-7:30pm, Saturdays & Sundays from 9:30am-12:30pm.
The instructor, David Norton, is a fifth degree black belt, certified with the US Aikido Federation. David has 20 years of experience teaching aikido.
Visitors are always welcome to watch or participate. The first class is always free!

The River Dragon Dojo is Southern Maryland's only Cuong Nhu Dojo. Cuong Nhu is a Vietnamese martial art practiced in America since 1971. Southern Maryland Shotokan Karate Club is a non-profit Karate club dedicated to practicing Shotokan Karate. All students train in the fundamentals of stance, punching, kicking, striking and blocking. Competitive Karate is not emphasized. However, as the club is a member of the ISKF, there are competitive avenues for those students interested in competition. Minimum age for membership is 11. Southern Maryland Aikido Center, located in the center of Waldorf, Maryland, offers traditional Aikikai Aikido classes for Adults and Children. Aikido is a non-competitive martial art that emphasizes flowing movement, control of balance, utilizing an opponent's energy, and control through joint locks. Our new dojo offers 900 sq feet of training mat space with dressing rooms, bathroom and sitting area.
Southern Maryland Aikido Center is member of the United States Aikido Federation and is also affiliated with Capital Aikikai, headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland. The USAF is the largest Aikido organization in the United States and is directly affiliated with the Aikikai Foundation in Tokyo, Japan. Members of Southern Maryland Aikido Center are able to test and earn rank recognized by aikido organizations around the world. All students are welcome to join or train, regardless of prior affiliation.
