The membership charter for The Rotary Club of Charles County—La Plata, Inc. was proposed on July 21st, 1975 and the 26 charter members celebrated our approval on November 15th, 1975. The formation of our club was made possible through the club efforts of the Rotary Club of St. Mary's (Lexington Park) and the individual efforts of Jesse Starkey, Bill Runyon and Roland Cumberland. Club meetings were held at the Howard Johnson Restaurant on the Corner of Route 6 & 301 where the Sunoco gas station is today, across the street from our current meeting place. Frank Wade Sr., a charter member and an owner of the restaurant, provided buffet breakfast for members every Wednesday morning at 7:30am. Since that time the club has grown to over 50 members and has served its community and community members for over 35 years. The Leonardtown Rotary Club was chartered on July 1, 1986 with twenty-five members. Our membership today is at the 50 member mark. Come and enjoy our programs with selected guest speakers in the cafeteria Atrium at St. Mary's Hospital, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. every Thursday. In our 25 year history we have given more than $598,000 to local programs responding to community needs. In addition to the funds given to local needs, the individual members have given $20,000 support to the International Polio Plus Program to eradicate polio and the club has provided $12,000 to other international projects such as refurbished computers and a digital library in India as well as a safe drinking water project in Honduras. Leonardtown Rotary is proud to be associated with St. May's College Annual Governor's Cup Yacht Race. Leonardtown Rotary also participates in Fire/Rescue Appreciation Day, the Farm Life Festival, and highway clean-up. The club markets the best seafood chowder in the Chesapeake region at the annual Oyster Festival. And when it comes to young people in this community, this organization provides scholarships for four local high school graduates who receive $1000 a year while in college, and also provides $1,500 in grants for continuing education for two teachers. Additionally we sponsor a Fluoride Rinse program for third graders in St. Mary's County public schools to help insure healthy teeth for children who may not have fluoride in their drinking water. Club members believe this assistance to St. Mary's County students is an important cornerstone of our annual giving. We have also proudly sponsored an Interact club at Leonardtown High School. This Interact club is now 13 years old, and is an extension of Rotary. Its members have the same dedication to community service and international understanding.

The Rotary Club of Lexington Park supports charities, provides scholarships to local students, and supports many organizations in the community. The Rotary Club of Prince Frederick supports youth, environmental, and community programs in Calvert County; and Rotary's international programs, such as the push to eradicate polio from the earth, avoidable blindness initiatives, and projects to improve the quality of the blood supply in Latin America. We meet for dinner most Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at Stoney's Restaurant in Prince Frederick (Please check our Web site to confirm the schedule and place).
