2017 Annual Spring "Fishin' Buddies" Derby Scheduled May 6
The Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism will sponsor the 2017 annual Spring Fishin' Buddies Derby at Gilbert Run Park in Dentsville, on Saturday, May 6, from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Anglers will compete by teams, which must include one adult at least 21 years of age and one child between the ages of 6 and 15. Each team must supply their own rods and bait. Trophies will be awarded in the two age divisions. Bank anglers will compete separately from those who fish from a boat. Local businesses have donated numerous fishing-related door prizes. All teams are eligible for the door prize drawings. Lunch will be provided to all participants.
The entry fee is $7 per team. Pre-registration is required since participation is limited.

Volunteers Needed on May 6 for Special Olympics Spring Games
Volunteers are needed for the 2017 Charles County Special Olympics Spring Games being held on Saturday, May 6 at Henry E. Lackey High School (3000 Chicamuxen Rd, Indian Head) from 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Score keepers, athlete escorts, and general volunteers are needed to assist with Bocce, Swimming, and Track and Field events.

IGNITE Charles County Business Resource Fair to be Held May 12
The Economic Development Department, in partnership with College of Southern Maryland's Entrepreneur and Innovation Institute, is hosting the IGNITE Charles County Business Resource Fair on Friday, May 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the College of Southern Maryland La Plata Campus (8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata) in the Center for Business and Industry building. The event will bring together the region's business resource partners so that local business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs can quickly and easily learn more about local, regional, state, and federal services and connect with the right resources.
Throughout the day, participants can visit resource fair tables and speak one-on-one with resource partners to gather information and network. There will be an IGNITE Charles County session held at 10 a.m. and then again at 1 p.m. During these sessions, entrepreneurs will share how they were able to "ignite" success. Topics include industry, government, networking, innovation, tenacity, and entrepreneurship.

Eighth Annual Port Tobacco Market Day Set for May 6
The Charles County Commissioners and the Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco invite residents and visitors to attend the eighth annual Port Tobacco Market Day event on Saturday, May 6 from 9 a.m.to 2 p.m. at the historic Port Tobacco Courthouse (Chapel Point Road, Port Tobacco).
This event will showcase some of Southern Maryland's local artists and vendors. Choose from antiques, jewelry, crafts, fresh produce, and more. The Charles County Garden Club will hold their annual plant sale. Food, baked goods, and drinks will be available for purchase. Step into the 18th century and tour the Port Tobacco Court House, Stagg Hall, and Burch House.
